Hi, so this my first blog for Rookery Equine. I want to start by thanking Rookery for this incredible opportunity, getting to use all the best equipment there to make sure Minnie is feeling on top form is amazing.
We had an unplanned quite start to the year due to Minnie pulling a muscle at the start of January. We gave her a long rehab meaning she had three months off full work. She had just come back into full work when we found out the exciting news that we had been chosen as one of the sponsored riders for Rookery Equine. To make sure she was feeling good after having to have months of box rest we booked her in for a Theraplate session before a busy couple of months.
Our first big outing of the year was my first BD Youth North West Camp at Somerford Park. Despite being slightly excited to be back out to start with, she worked so well in two amazing lessons with Levi Hunt. We finally cracked our simple changes which is something we have always struggled with and came away with lots to work on. It was great to see the Rookery Equine team whilst we were there and Minnie got to enjoy a session with the Activo Med rug. I had a great time, learning lots and getting to meet lots of new people.
We then went off for our first competition of the year. Despite the fact that Minnie turned 17 this year and is normally quite consistent in her tests, we have learnt that if she has to be on box rest for a while she tends to think she’s a 5 year old again until she gets back into the swing of things. This resulted in a few added moves but we still ended up winning the two Novice bronze sections.
We were then back off to Somerford, this time for the BD Youth North West Championship Show, again another first. Minnie did two lovely tests scoring 86.1% in the first test to come 2nd and 77.7% in the second test to come equal 5th. I was so pleased with how she went and we were definitely starting to get back to were we left off at the end of last year.
After a busy April we then went on to do our final two competitions before a short break for my A levels. Firstly we headed of to Southview to do the two Novice classes. On route we stopped off at Rookery for Minnie to have a session with the Activo-Med rug. She did two nice tests winning her section in both classes but also coming second overall in the first class. I really felt the rug helped her to relax over her back more as she can get a bit tense in indoors.
Finally we headed of to Beaver Hall for our last competition till after my exams and it was one of those almost days. She produced some of the best work she has done, with the things we have been working coming into the arena but unfortunately a few costly mistakes dropped our mark down. Still scoring 65.95%, just not the mark she deserved for the rest of the test but still lots of positive to come from the day.
I am so pleased with how she has gone over these past two months. We are improving each time we go out and she only just be getting up to full fitness. I can’t wait to see what’s to come this year in a long summer of competing and training.
